Garmin as a company was set up in 1989 and today is word leader in satellite navigation systems. Their technology can be found in cars, motorcycle sat navs, marine, aviation, tracking animals and children loads more. For the purpose of this article I will discuss Garmin GPS watches which can be used for personal training.

Garmin is an expert in the fitness and training niche with their huge range of watches. The forerunner range is an example of Garmin GPS watches at their best. This range of watches goes beyond the capabilities of an ordinary watch just telling the time and lap speed. They utilize 24 satellite which orbit the earth for their GPS system which give very accurate distance and time measurements. All the information can be recorded and used to improve one’s performance.

The GPS system can give you piece of mind if you are long distance runner training in an new and unfamiliar location or if weather conditions are very unfavourable, the GPS is accurate up to 3 meters and can be used like a map so that you cannot get lost.

Briefly I will look two of the more popular watches in the forerunner range:

The Forerunner 305.

The forerunner 305 has large face which makes it easy to read info while one is training. Because of it’s large face you can get up to 4 data points simultaneously. Although it is bigger than a sports watch it is light and very comfortable to wear. Information can be downloaded to a computer through a USB connection for a record of training.

The Forerunner 405CX.

Although this is a smaller watch and look more like a sports watch it can only show 2 data points while training. This is more expansive than the 305 because it incorporates more technology in a smaller watch. This watch allows easier transfer of data to a computer with the use of it’s inbuilt ANT technology, information is transfer wirelessly. This watch also allows you to share your workouts with other 405cx users so you can compete against them.

This is only a brief outline of the 305 and 405cx in Garmin GPS watches which can be your very own personal trainer and can be an investment as it is a once off cost where a personal trainer is an ongoing cost.
