Car GPS units are great devices! They show you where you are on an electronic map and tell you how to get where you’re going with voice instructions.
Once you get your first GPS, you’ll wonder what in the world you ever did without it!
Buying a car GPS can be a little intimidating, though. There are so many features, manufacturers, and the price range is huge! You can buy a GPS for as little as $150, or spend up to $900!
The big question is how do you go about deciding which unit to buy?
This article’s going to help you out with that. For one thing, let’s look at three things you need to know about when shopping for your GPS–who makes it, what does it do, and how much will it cost. We’ll take each of these in turn and discuss them.
As far as manufacturers of car GPS units, there are three main ones who control about 90% of the total U. S. market. They are Garmin, Tom Tom, and Magellan. You can buy units made by others, but with the size of these companies and their commitment to quality–why would you?
Of course, that’s a personal opinion. You could easily argue that the smaller companies will have more features for less money. I guess it’s a personal thing. I like to know my device is going to be supported next year, and the next.
Garmin is the industry leader with 50% of the market. Tom Tom next with right at 20%, and Magellan third with slightly less than Tom Tom.
Does that mean you need to rush out and buy a Garmin car GPS unit?
I like Garmin quite a lot, but I don’t think so. Before you spend your hard-earned cash, take a look at what the other two have to offer.
Garmin has the largest product line, with GPS devices selling anywhere from $150 to $900. They are very competitive in the lower and middle price ranges, and virtually own the upper end of the market. The Garmin nuvi 880 can do everything except tie your shoes. (They’re working on a model that does that for next year!)
Tom Tom has taken a lot of market share away from Garmin recently by offering a quality product with more features at less money. The Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition, for instance can do essentially everything the Garmin nuvi 350 can, but costs $50 less. If you’re interested in more features, such as hands-free calling with Bluetooth, then the Tom Tom 920T might be your ticket.
In GPS years, Magellan might be called the granddaddy of them all. They were one of the first companies to develop this technology for consumer use. Their Maestro 4250 sells for a mere $250, but is a direct competitor of the Garmin nuvi 350.
One thing I really like about Magellan is their deal with AAA, where you can get the AAA Tour Book right on the device. For AAA lovers, like me that’s quite a plus!
